How to download TikTok videos on PC

A computer is the most reliable place to save a TikTok file: a real downloads folder, a real file manager, and no share-sheet detour. No software is required.

No installer, no extension

TikTok does not publish a desktop app for this, and you do not need one. A browser can open the public post, and TikSwoop can fetch the file and hand it to the browser's download manager. That is the entire toolchain: browser, page, file.

This matters for security. Desktop “TikTok downloader” installers are a common carrier for adware, and browser extensions that request access to every page can read more than they need. A website that asks for a link and returns a file has a much smaller footprint.

The steps on a computer

  1. Copy the post link

Open the video on <bdi>tiktok.com</bdi>, click Share, then Copy link. If you are on the profile page, open the video first.

  2. Paste into TikSwoop

Open the site in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, paste the link into the field and press Download.

  3. Wait for the result card

The server resolves the post and prepares the file. A slow connection affects this step more than the download itself.

  4. Click Download video

The browser saves the file to its default download folder and shows it in the download panel.

  5. Open the folder

Use the download panel's “Show in folder” action, or open Downloads manually. <bdi>Ctrl+J</bdi> opens the panel in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows and Linux; <bdi>Cmd+Shift+J</bdi> opens it in Chrome on macOS.

Where the file lands

On Windows, the default is <bdi>C:\Users\<name>\Downloads</bdi>. On macOS it is <bdi>~/Downloads</bdi>. On Linux it is usually <bdi>~/Downloads</bdi> or the XDG download directory. If you have changed the browser's download location, the download panel shows the actual path; hover the file entry to see it.

Safari on macOS saves to the Downloads folder too, but its download list is a separate popover rather than a full page. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all expose a downloads page that can open the containing folder. On Linux, the file manager is usually Files, Dolphin or Thunar; the path in the download panel is the reliable way to find it, because desktop environments disagree about the visible name of the Downloads folder.

If you use a work computer with a managed browser, downloads may be redirected to a quarantine folder or scanned before they appear. That is a policy on the machine, not a failure of the download. The browser's download panel is the source of truth for where the file went.

Why right-click “Save video as…” is not the same thing

Right-clicking the video player and choosing Save video as… only works when the page exposes a direct media URL. TikTok's player uses a signed, short-lived stream and often a blob URL, so the context-menu save either is unavailable or saves a broken file. It also bypasses the download path that keeps a signed URL out of your browser history.

The download button on the result card is the supported path. It streams the bytes through the server, sets a filename, and never hands the signed TikTok URL to the page.

If the download fails

If the browser blocks the download, check the address bar for a blocked-download icon. Managed browsers and some antivirus tools block MP4 files from unfamiliar sites until you allow them. Allow the download for this site, then retry.

If the file is a few kilobytes and will not play, the server returned an error page and the browser saved it anyway. Delete it and retry. If the problem repeats, the post may have been removed between the lookup and the download.

If a corporate proxy strips the Content-Disposition header, the file may save with a generic name and no extension. Rename it to .mp4; the bytes are usually intact. If the size is wrong, retry on a network without the proxy.

Desktop limits

No batch downloads, no playlists, no channel archiving. No private posts or stories. No editing a watermark out of a file you already have. No audio conversion. The tool downloads one public post at a time, in the browser you already have.

FAQ

Do I need to install anything on Windows?
No. Use any current browser. Avoid third-party downloader installers; they are not needed for this and are a common source of adware.
Why does the file have no extension?
A proxy or browser setting stripped the filename header. Rename the file to .mp4 if the size looks like a video, or retry on another network.
Can I download on a Chromebook?
Yes. ChromeOS uses the same Chrome download flow and saves to the Files app's Downloads folder.
Does right-click save work?
Usually not. TikTok's player uses a signed, short-lived stream, so the context menu either has no save action or produces a broken file.
Can I download a whole profile?
No. There is no bulk or channel download. Each request is one public post.
Is the download the same file on every browser?
Yes. The server sends the same bytes; only the download UI and the folder differ.
